Help me give my students a place where we can gather together to collaborate, and then go build, create, explore, and discover with our new items to encourage our brains to be creative!
"Enthusiasm in the steam that drives the engine." While this quote isn't literally talking about STEAM projects, it holds true. Our students need to feel enthusiastic about what they're doing to have some buy-in during our academic time together. They need to be encouraged to think broadly about real-world problems if we want them to grow up to be successful and productive when they become adults.
Our classroom is a place that students enjoy being where they are loved, valued, and respected for who they are, while also getting their academic needs met; we need to ensure that we are growing them socially and emotionally as well.
By working collaboratively with each other on STEM/STEAM projects in our classroom, students will be perfecting their needed 21st century skills. These are strengths that can be absent due to unstable home environments, lack of exposure, or inadequate experience with these particular abilities.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in our students' lives because they will have a greater opportunity to explore STEM/STEAM options that they wouldn't normally have. Jobs that involve science, technology, engineering, and math are expected to grow by at least 16% and our students need exposure to these skills to be able to have a leg up on their competition. Students will also be working on different skill sets while creating and building. Learning skills such as critical thinking, communicating, creativity, and collaborating will be covered while students work with one another. Various life skills like leadership, productivity, flexibility, and social connections will be grown as well. These are things that, once developed, will continue to grow within and take students far in their adult life. Last, we will be covering literacy skills. These ever-important things will impact the students right away: getting information, and using media and technology.
By giving our students choice time to explore, build, create, discover, lead, collaborate, and think critically without boundaries, they will thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
As they improve these skills, they will carry the skills into later schooling, and on in to adulthood. They will use them to positively impact themselves, their families, and their chosen career.
We will also be gathering on our carpet with enough room for all of us to read stories about coding, engineers, builders, and people who changed the world. While we are reading, we will be having important discussions, and students will be able to use these books as windows to see into other's lives, mirrors to reflect themselves, and sliding glass doors to step into other cultures. This is a safe space for our students to connect and discover more through books.
