Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach right where I want to be: in the school with the highest rate of free or reduced-price lunch (86%) in my school district. I love being here because my beloved young students are building resilience and a love of learning alongside academic skills. Additionally, almost all of them are learning English. They are bright, wonderful children who are overcoming many challenges. They love coming to our rigorous yet nurturing and joyful school, and I love being their Kindergarten teacher.
My Project
Literacy research (such as the 2018 study at Australian National University led by Joanna Sikora) shows that little children with robust home libraries attain higher literacy rates. Often, low-income families do not have adequate home libraries, making it difficult for young students to build the critically important home reading habit to support their reading in school.
Help me build my kindergartners' home reading habit with take-home books connected to in-school reading!
Liza Charlesworth's wonderful little books are perfect for this purpose--they are funny, engaging and perfectly sized for Kindergarten hands. They steadily increase in reading difficulty from Level A to D.
Your support on this project would allow me to send home with each child one special book each week of the school year--a whole-class book that we will discuss together after their week of reading it at home, thus reinforcing their home reading habit.
My reading instruction will connect their home and school reading. I'll send home these books with an interactive reading journal, and our in-class discussions will build their reading comprehension skills and reinforce the importance of doing the reading at home.
All these connections will help ensure that these books will not be forgotten at the bottom of backpacks--instead, these books have a clear purpose that will give my Kindergartners exactly the practice they need to become lifelong readers.
