This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The fifth grade students at our school come from a variety of backgrounds. They are enthusiastic about learning and like many fifth graders, they are very social! They work hard and want to do their very best each day at school.
We are a school on the grow with a lot of potential!
We are a Title I elementary school located in Richmond, Virginia. Our school focus is to improve our independent reading ability. I am committed to enhancing my students' personal library's. Your help will support this initiative.
My Project
Many of my students are reluctant readers. They often do not see themselves in literature and they find it hard to relate some of the topics they usually see in the library. This can lead to many students not having books they love available to read or at home.
I want my students to have books in their home libraries that they will want to read over and over again!
The New Kids is a graphic novel that I am sure will grab their attention. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the story is engaging. This book has won many awards; the Newbery Medal, the Coretta Scott King Author Award, and the Kirkus Prize for Young Readers’ Literature.
This story is about starting over at a new school where diversity is low and the struggle to fit in is real. My students are headed to middle school next year and fitting in is a big deal. The New Kid will be an easy read for them and they will be excited to read this book many times!
