Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand.” – Chinese proverb.
I teach enthusiastic, funny, and energetic 4-5 year old learners in a collaborative (general education and special education) Expanded Transitional Kindergarten in a large, urban, 100% Title I, Los Angeles school.
My students spend their day actively learning through play, literature, music, movement, and hands-on experiences. Our classroom provides students with opportunities to develop their social skills and the foundation for academic learning. We have a diverse range of abilities and work together to foster an inclusive community.
My Project
Science learning doesn't happen in books, it occurs when students actively engage in hands on learning! My students will study the life cycle of insects through observing and documenting the growth of butterflies, praying mantis, and ladybugs.
Young learners are naturally curious and ask questions about the world around them.
We will search for answers to our insect questions through daily observations, making predictions, charting their growth, and add to our knowledge base by using informational text and technology.
After gathering data, my students will be challenged to complete a school-home STEMS project. With support from school and home, students will be asked to design and construct a habitat for an insect!
We will record the insects' reactions to their new homes on video and in our science journals.
I can't wait to see what types of structures my students create and the conversations that follow!
