Build Math Skills and Confidence for Students with Special Needs
Help me give my students an opportunity to explore grade-level concepts and show what they know while addressing individual Special Needs and English Language Learning.
The students in my class enter each day with amazing and inquisitive minds. Our class is designed to engage students with special needs in rich mathematical discussion and to build mathematical skills and strategies.
Most of our students are English Language Learners with Special Needs who benefit from discovering math through hands-on exploration.
Although there are gaps in age-appropriate skills, these students are able to navigate through grade-level concepts when given the proper supports.
These students are amazing. They dig in each day, ask good questions and want to learn. I am fortunate to have to opportunity to teach each and every one of them.
My Project
Effective instruction in math for students with special needs requires a variety of presentation and response opportunities. Many times students have an understanding of a concept but are not able to easily communicate their understanding to peers and teachers.
Incorporating hands-on learning materials for my 8th grade students will not only allow grade-level learning but help identify and address gaps in previous learning.
Students will be able to independently work and assess their own understandings while providing instructional information to help design future lessons. These materials will also help support the Math Practice Standards and a Growth Mindset in students.
