Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third-grade students are amazing! They are kind, helpful, motivated and are eager to learn how to be a successful citizen outside of school. As a teacher in a low-income/ high poverty school, our students are met with many challenges. Many students come from high poverty homes and face a language barrier. My hope is to ensure them a high quality, positive and rigorous education, regardless of their background.
My students LOVE coming to school each day because we make it fun and engaging.
Not only do I strive to make my lessons engaging, but I also try to create a classroom where students are comfortable and focused. I want my classroom to be a place where students feel welcomed in and can become lifelong learners.
My Project
Every year, my students love being able to build, explore and create with their classmates. When given free academic choice, most students choose to play with Legos or Magna-Tiles. The process of creating something new using their imagination to solve a real-world problem is an experience I would like to be able to give all of my students.
STEM activities like the Real-World STEM Challenges and Design and Build Engineering Centers are the perfect way to help foster student's imagination and real-world problem-solving skills.
In elementary school, students are exposed to various academic experiences that will help them determine what career they want to study as they get older. Throughout the day, students would be given the opportunity to use the STEM activities and challenges. These would allow them to work collaboratively with their classmates while problem-solving and communicating with one another.
STEM activities also include the process of trial and error. Students will fail when trying to create a bridge, but through observation, teamwork, and perseverance, they will succeed! My hope is that students will build up their growth mindset and change their attitude from "I can't do it" to "I can't do it YET."
I have also included two comfy floor seats to create a comfortable designated spot for students to sit at as they work together. These seats will be the start of creating flexible seating options for students to choose as our materials increases, so will our space needed to accommodate them.
