I teach almost 500 kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade students in Kansas. 35% of my students receive a free or reduced-price breakfast and/or lunch. There are also many special education students and ELL students (English language learners). I try to find new and interesting ways to help my students learn using music and other subject areas.
I am starting a fun robotics club for my students so they can work on STEAM.
We will meet weekly throughout the school year. The new Lego Boost robotics system allows students to build, code, and play. The 5-in-1 system allows students to build five different robots including: Vernie the Robot, Guitar 4000, Auto-Builder, Frankie the Cat, and M.T.R.4. Students can build, code, and play with any of these five robots.
My Project
I would love to start a robotics club at my school. Lego Boost robotics are easier to build and code than the Mindstorm robotics and would be a nice addition because the LEGO Boost compares really well to all other competing robots out there.
I want my kids to know about coding, robotics, and technology.
The age range is 7 to 12 years old and is perfect for the elementary aged kids I teach. Each model is part toy and part experiment because the app has an included code that makes the characters lively and interactive while leaving room for customization. All the sounds and processing is done by your tablet, so that’s a smart way to save costs and make the “brain” brick really simple. The LEGO Boost app guides you through building and programming each robot in a set of challenges that are unlocked as you go. I know the kids will enjoy building the guitar and integrating science, technology, engineering, and math.
