My students need building materials that can help them explore the science of ramps and tunnels by building various ramps and bridges with the Build-A-Bridge set and creating tunnel structures with the Duplo Tube Experiment set.
"The things that make me different are the things that make me." - Winnie the Pooh. This is true of all of us including the students who make up my Early Childhood Special Education Class.
My class is filled with little explorers ages 3-5 with varying levels of ability.
Although each child in the class is identified with a developmental concern or need, they each come with their own set of gifts and abilities. I have three different classes, with a total of 19 students ages 3-5. Our school is located in rural Northern Wisconsin.
My Project
Research indicates that preschool children learn best through play. There has also been a push to include more science and math in preschool settings. The Build-A-Bridge kit, Duplo Tube Experiment kit, and Duplo vehicle kits requested in this project bring those two concepts together. The students in my classroom love to build using blocks such as duplos. They also like to see how things "go." During a recent unit on winter sports, we made bobsleds out of toilet paper tubes with the thought of pushing them down ramps to see how they would go. We created ramps with make shift materials we could find in the room.
It was through this experience that I observed how much joy and discovery ramp play brought to my students.
For that reason, I am determined to provide more opportunities for my students to explore the science of ramps and tunnels, but was lacking the materials to do so. The Build-A-Bridge kit and Duplo Tube Experiment Kit provide all the materials needed for hours of bridge building play and exploration, bringing together one of their favorite play activities; building with Duplos, with one of their favorite science activities; building ramps and tunnels, as they learn how to "Build and Go."
