I teach a gifted program of students that is math-based, but where the math is compacted so that it is able to integrate all content areas in problem based learning. This year, I have not only fourth through sixth grades but also integrate first through third graders throughout the year. I work hard to include students in decision making and classroom management to make them feel a part of their education. Students spend three full years with me as their teacher in grades 4-6.
I want my students to be happy, eager, and healthy learners.
They feel really comfortable in my class but find their quirkiness and intensities overwhelming for other students throughout their day. My students get frustrated by their confusing social interactions with their grade level peers as a whole and can be highly emotional in their responses to teachers and students alike. I would like to have a class library to explore and discuss their challenges in a healthy way.
My Project
My students worry a lot about their world - school, home, and the world at large. We are working on bringing mediation and breathing exercises to our class in order to manage some of their internal stresses. In addition, I would like to use building challenges with legos to incorporate excitement with them. Legos can be used for STEM activities and just to relax and let their imaginations soar.
My students need moments to simply let their minds wander and simply live in the moment.
Breathing, meditation, and letting their imagination go are ways that they can be kids and let the world around them go away for a while.
