My Students
The students are 2nd graders in a rural North Carolina elementary school. We have just over 200 students with more than half of the students coming from low‑income households. Students spend their second grade year learning the foundations of reading.
Second grade is an important year in the building of reading foundational skills.
Students learn to apply phonics and word analysis skills when decoding words. They also learn common vowel teams, prefixes, suffixes, inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences, and sight words.
My Project
Second grade is such an important year when it comes to the foundation of language arts. This is the last year when students are "learning to read" instead of "reading to learn." It is this year when the building blocks are put in place for success in the future. Students are learning how words work. They are learning new letter combination sounds, prefixes and suffixes, and how to chunk words into parts to figure them out. They need a hands-on activity, such as these magnetic letters and boards, to help them grasp these very important concepts. These magnetic boards will be used in our spelling station weekly.
