Our campus is one of more than 80 elementary schools in the Austin Independent School District and serves roughly 1,000 students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. My class is a diverse group of students, each with their own strengths and interests. They are inquisitive learners with lots of energy.
I strive to provide my students with an education that best fits their needs to become lifelong learners.
Just as students have different strengths and interests, they also have different learning styles.
"I'm thinking" or "I don't know what to write" are common responses from students during our writing block. Therefore, I plan to use Legos as a visual to enforce and support writing fluency.
Building bricks and mini figures are the perfect way to “hook” and engage little writers by allowing them to visualize and plan stories in a hands-on way!
I will use these materials in a writing center where students can work independently or in small groups. They will first build their story using the Legos and then write a creative story that pairs with the literacy genre we are learning about. My goal is that this approach will help strengthen my reluctant writers and develop their creative writing skills.
