Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a small city, which has high poverty and crime rates. Most of my students are from Puerto Rico; some arrived a couple of years ago but many have come within the last year after they were displaced by the hurricane. They are in ninth grade and are engaging in a rigorous college- and career-preparatory program in the hopes that they can become the future leaders of this community.
Research has shown that second language acquisition is much easier when students are literate in their first languages; thus, my emphasis on building both native language literacy and English literacy.
I want my students to be able to learn from the written word and to be educated consumers of information.
My Project
This project aims to bring reading books into my classroom. I am hoping to purchase free reading books for my ninth graders in hopes of developing them into readers.
My students come in with various experiences related to reading: some are literate, some are not, some read for pleasure, some have never read more than a paragraph before.
By selecting a wide range of books, I hope to draw all students in and allow them to see the worlds that books can reveal to them.
Students will have access to these books both in the classroom and to take home. Part of their weekly homework requirement is to read outside of class.
