I teach a prekindergarten inclusion class of 14 students in a Title 1, low income school. In order to be accepted into our program, each student went through a screening process and all have been deemed "educationally at-risk". In addition, I also have students with autism and severe developmental delays. Many of my students come from low-income families and qualify for free or reduced lunch.
All my students are wonderfully curious and eager to learn. However, many of them start the year with no concept of what a letter is and are unable to name, much less write, any letters of the alphabet. Identifying and writing letters are important skills that are the foundation of future literacy success. Since they love working with their hands, I would like to give them some hands-on materials that will be helpful with learning this important concept.
I feel that my students are more engaged when learning this concept through the hands-on manipulation of letters. The Lakeshore Letter Builders shows the children how to form the letters step by step, while reinforcing the basic lines and curves they will use to start printing. The Giant Tracing Letters are individual letters the students can write on that can be used independently in the writing center so they can practice proper letter formation.
Your donation will assist my students in identifying and writing the letters of the alphabet while allowing them to have fun while learning. Thank you so much for considering my proposal.
