Build A Classroom Library for Ms. Murphy's Reading Class!
My students need a classroom library to increase their literacy and comprehension strategies, in addition to opening their minds to the ways of the world!
"We read to find ourselves, more fully and more strangely than otherwise we could hope to find"-- Harold Bloom
To this quotation, I would add that we also read to attain our independence. For my freshman students currently reading on a sixth-grade level, there is much to be gained.
Only 2.5% (that's 1 out of 40) black boys in Chicago Public Schools will graduate from a 4-year college or university.
Our charter school, located in the heart of Chicago, is a safe-haven from many of the threats and environmental factors that make this harsh statistic a reality. I believe that endowing my students with reading skills will not only lend itself to success in all other academic subjects, but it will also ensure the self-reliance and self-advocacy necessary to deliver my students from the hardships they might face.
I am requesting books at a variety of skill levels so all students can enjoy an unconscious moment of delight with a text, no matter what their ability. OUR READING LIBRARY IS CURRENTLY NON-EXISTENT. In order to attain our curriculum goals, we need books with which to practice our budding literacy skills. The Critical Reading Course simultaneously focuses upon developing the vocabulary, critical thinking and analysis skills, comprehension, fluency, and annotating expertise of every student simultaneously.
With your help, the benefits of reading can become relevant again to a generation that spends most of its time with electronics.
As they acquire new knowledge with reading, their world will begin to seem far bigger than the city limits of Chicago.
