My students need various insect specimen to help them study insect adaptations. They will use the supplies and what they have learned to invent a new insect species.
I teach science to a diverse group of 119 sixth graders. They come from a variety of different backgrounds. Each one is unique and beautiful in their own way. Over half of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
They are full of curiosity and love to explore and learn new things.
Science is both exciting and challenging to them. They are truly an amazing group! My goal is to provide them with the tools they need to be successful. They are our future!
My Project
Insects make up over 80% of all animals on earth. With your help my students will be able to study and make observations using the different insect specimen. They will learn and identify the body parts of insects (head, thorax, abdomen, compound eyes, and other adaptive unique features). This will also help them learn about the different function(s) of those body parts that help the insect survive. After learning about real-life insects and how they have adapted to their environments, they will then use the other materials provided to create their own futuristic insect species. They will use what they have learned and their imagination to add additional features that will help their insect live in the environment they choose. Once they have designed their insect they will then use the materials to build a 3-D model of their insect. They will give their insect a scientific name and explain their insect's adaptations.
