Bugs Don't Bug Us! Becoming Young Scientists

My students need nets, field guides, and pitfall traps to help them become entomologists (insect scientists) through collecting and observing insects.

My Students

The words "I want to be a scientist!" are very powerful words in a middle school classroom. My students love opportunities to become scientists by solving complex problems, identifying specimens, and using real scientific tools. I teach science, but I also show students what they can become.

My classroom is full of inquisitive students who love a good challenge and will rise to the occasion to learn new science concepts and to solve complex problems.

Many students love to do extra-curricular science activities, like Stem Club or Science Olympiad. This project will provide students with a different opportunity to extend their learning outside of the classroom by taking students outdoors to become wildlife biologists.

My Project

Do you remember catching a frog near your favorite childhood pond? What about holding a caterpillar on your finger and feeling it tickle you as it walked along your hand? These are the life experiences that get many people excited about science and that people remember throughout their lives. Even if my students don't have someone to take them outside or a place to go explore at home, they will be able to have these life-changing experiences with this project. My students will become entomologists, scientists who study insects. They will have the ability to use real scientific tools, like sweep nets, seines, pitfall traps, and field guides, to collect and identify insects. They will be able to group organisms by similar characteristics and understand why certain adaptations are helpful to living in specific habitats. Most importantly, my students will be able to have real life experiences exploring nature and learning how all the living things interact and depend on each other.

This project will make a difference because many young people don't believe they can ever become a scientist, but after this project my students will be able to relate to scientists and understand that they can become scientists when they get older.

They will understand how biologists conduct field studies and what scientists do with their data afterward. The main goals of this project are that students will become excited about science and will want to continue pursuing learning for fun!
