My wonderful kindergartners are between the ages of 5 and 7. For many of them, this is the first time they have entered a classroom, picked up a book, or explored music, art, and the sciences. They come to school with smiles on their faces and an eagerness to learn, but they also come from very different backgrounds.
Many of my students live in poverty, many are learning English as a second language, and many are immigrants and refugees from other countries.
Even so, my students come to school willing to take chances and grow while teaching their teacher a thing or two about how to better meet the needs of her students. They also show her how to view each day with open eyes and an open mind.
My Project
My students need wooden storage lockers for the safe securing of backpacks and belongings!. Every morning as the students are sitting and eating their breakfast I walk through the coat room and pick up the half dozen coats, scarves, mittens and backpacks all over the floor. The coat room also acts as our classroom storage and line up area. It is nearly impossible to walk through that coat area without tripping over someones backpack on the floor. With their belongings in such close proximity to each other, when lice hits the classroom, it is inevitable that it has spread from one student to another.
These classroom lockers will provide students the ability to put away their belongings so the coat room is cleaner and lice are kept at bay.
Students will have their own lockers to place their coats, hats, mittens, gloves, and backpacks in. There will no longer be any "Whose hat is this?" at the end of the day. No more lost sweatshirts or missing mittens. Hopefully these lockers will also cut down on the spread of lice within our classroom. This will also help to keep our students in school and not at home missing out on valuable lifelong skills.
