My Students

My students carry the burden of situations they can not possibly control or fix. They take on responsibilities beyond their years, bringing them to school each day. My goal, as a teacher, is to let my kids be kids. I want them to explore, discover, and find a unique passion for learning. I can not shelter them from what they see once they leave the classroom, but I can give them a space where they are safe, encouraged, and are given every opportunity to become lifelong learners.

Our district is made up of 98% minority students, with a growing population of English language learners, and 100% of our children are on free or reduced lunch.

I want to set the stage to engage ALL my students through diverse learning expirences and help them aspire to be the next great thinkers, architects, engineers, mathematicians, artists, scientists and more!

My Project

We are breaking all the rules! Inviting insects into our classroom! Ants and butterflies are creatures that my students encounter daily. Why not build on these everyday experiences by studying the life cycle, anatomy, and habits of the insects all around us? Through a project-based learning model students will use previous background knowledge of insects and build, piece by piece, a fuller, more complete understanding of ants and butterflies through informational text and meticulous observations of the insects themselves!

Throughout the spring, students will monitor the development of the butterflies and map the progress of the ants tunneling through their clear gel home.

Through this project I will help my students get a glimpse of what it is like to be a scientist, observing, questioning, researching, and documenting the world around them.
