Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 29 wonderful 5th-grade students, which include special education students, magnet students, English Language Learners, and intervention students. They are very enthusiastic about learning and are always eager to explore new things. They love coming to school every day, and always have a big smile on their faces, despite the socioeconomic hardships they endure in the community in which they live. They attend a school in California, in a low-income neighborhood. The school is both a regular and highly gifted/magnet institution. However, my students are part of the regular school and do not have access to the materials and enrichment activities that the magnet students have.
My Project
My students are always excited when we do hands-on science activities. So it has become a challenge for me to develop activities that are entertaining, engaging, and meaningful to reinforce the concepts and skills in STEM that we are learning. That is why I would like to use the two Breakout EDU kits and the Meet the Minibeasts book to teach my students about the importance and life cycle of insects in a more challenging way. Students will work in groups to do an investigation about certain insects by finding clues around the room and online and by putting together puzzles to unlock the locks in the Breakout box. Every time they find a clue or complete a puzzle, they will unlock one of the five locks on the box. Once they have found all the clues and read the book about insects, they will be able to unlock the box and find out what insects they were investigating. Finally, they will share their findings with the whole class. This is a process that can take up to an hour.
I strongly believe that if students are involved in activities that are engaging, entertaining, and meaningful to them, they will learn better because they like what they are doing.
Thus internalizing the information more easily. By taking part in this innovative actitivies, students will further develop skills in STEM because they will be required to analyze data, think critically, collaborate with others and share their findings to become better problem solvers.
Your support will make it possible for my students to obtain resources that both entertaining and educational to learn more about insects.
