This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are in three buildings, in an urban, high poverty district, and two buildings are under receivership. All three schools realize the value of music education and used funding to staff instrumental music, but instrumental supplies can be tough to find in our district.
My students are incredibly eager, and are always looking to push their musicality to the next level.
My students are often looking for an outlet, and I am trying to expose as many students as possible to music.
My Project
The 130 students that I see across three schools in the inner city are constantly craving for something more than their regular classes. In band, they know that they can make mistakes, and we are always working towards our next goal or performance.
My students need basic supplies to maintain and continue playing their instruments, and it can get very expensive.
Our district provides instruments, but the consumables, like reeds and cleaning supplies, or smaller percussion instruments, are not included. The students know how to maintain their instruments, and need the proper supplies like germicide to do so. The percussion students are always asking for small instruments like the requested woodblock, triangle, and tambourine to create different feelings in the pieces of music.
