I remember my first grade teacher ALWAYS had a fun project for us to complete. The best part of the whole project was choosing the bright colors of construction paper to use. We got to be hands on with simple supplies - construction paper, glue, and on very special occasions - watercolors!
I teach 29 amazing, energetic, enthusiastic, creative first graders.
Many of them come to school with nothing. This year, more than any other year, I've had to supply the most basic school supplies for many of my students. The students depend on us for more than just their education. Our school provides the majority of the students with free breakfast, lunch, and snack. But, with budget cuts, the teachers are forced to use their own money for most of our classroom materials.
My Project
I believe in the importance of allowing students to show their creativity. I try to have fun art projects for the students to do with every unit. I think the students remember the information better when it's tied to a hands-on project. Unfortunately, because of budget cuts, the school hasn't been able to buy construction paper for the teachers to use. Usually, we'd be able to go pick from a nice variety of colors. This year, we're lucky if we can find any construction paper at all. So far, I've been buying my own paper so my students can still make fun educational projects: pattern caterpillars, shape scarecrows, and our deconstructed pumpkins that helped us count by 10s. I've also been supplying the majority of the class with glue and we're just about out - and it's just the first quarter! I don't want to stop allowing the kids to do fun projects but I just can't afford it anymore.
First graders need time to practice tracing, cutting, and gluing.
Without construction paper and glue sticks they won't get the chance to practice those skills OR to create a fun project that helps them learn. With your help, they'll be able to create SO many fun projects that will enhance their learning in all subject areas. My students need construction paper, glue sticks, and watercolor materials. Please help me provide them with the materials they need!
