My students need leveled fiction books. Second graders get very excited when they can read a chapter book. The I Can Read Books are a great transition to traditional novels.
My class is in a large Title 1 Elementary School. All the students at my school are provided free breakfast. Many get food packs to take home for the weekend. Some live in single parent households and have trouble providing necessary school supplies, coats or funds for field trips.
I tell every child in my class that I love them everyday, we just never know if that is something that a child gets at home.
My students know I care about them and their future. The work we do together matters and can make a difference. Attending college will be a challenge for many of them. Developing into readers, writers, and thinkers can determine if they will be globally aware and contribute to their community as adults.
My Project
Everyone in our class has a reading buddy. These books will allow my students to read new books that are on their reading level and discuss what they read with their buddy. Having new and leveled books to add to our reading cart will encourage reading and insure everyone is growing as a reader.
When a child enjoys books and wants to read, they learn to love reading.
Having book choices that are engaging and fun help children become readers by choice, not just students who read what is assigned. My goal is that all my students will learn that reading is enjoyable, worthwhile and important.
