This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am excited to be moving from fifth grade to sixth grade with my students this year. They are an amazing group of students that I have been lucky enough to teach in second, fifth, and now sixth grade. My school serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade. We are a Title I school and all our students are eligible to receive free lunches.
My students are hardworking and eager to learn.
Unfortunately, these amazing students don't always have access to some basic supplies that students take for granted! Many students don't come to school with a pencil, let alone the one binder needed for all 3 of my classes.
For the past three years, I have worked with my students on a community service project. We have done supply drives and worked with a local homeless shelter. This year, we would like improve the school culture. One of our ideas is to add a Buddy Bench to the school yard and help students to include others and be a buddy, not a bully.
My Project
Our students are working with a program called Young Heroes and they are trying to be heroes by improving the culture of our school. We plan to do a few different projects this year, but the biggest project is to encourage others to be a buddy, not a bully.
In order to change the culture of the school, we want to give students a buddy bench so they have a place to go if they are feeling lonely.
We are going to have buddy ambassadors in each grade trained so they can go over to students who sit on the bench.
This bench will be introduced early with our kindergarten students so they can use the bench every year as they go through our school.
