Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What do you remember about your early days of school? Usually it was some kind of exciting, hands-on activity that stayed in your memory. That's what I want to create for my Bushwick, Brooklyn K to 5th grade science students. They need to explore science in many different ways and I want to provide lots of exciting activities with live critters.
For example, how wonderful it would be to learn about insects by looking at real-live 3-inch Madagascar hissing cockroaches? I've seen them at the Hall of Science museum as well as at the Brooklyn Children's museum. I have spoken to their staff members for advice on their care and learning experiences. I believe they would make an interesting experience for students to learn about bugs and their role in nature. The students could weigh them, make observations, draw them, and learn about different habitats that animals need.
I am buying hermit crabs, but they'll need an assortment of shells to choose from when they grow and need to change their homes. Cray fish can be used to learn about invertebrates.
Children will LOVE science with an assortment of creepy crawly creatures. They will learn responsibility by helping with their care and they might acquire a love of nature. Please help me acquire these motivational critter animals. Thanks so much and I'll have the budding scientists blooming in no time.
