Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach twenty second grade students in a low-income community in east San Jose, California. This past weekend, I attended a conference at a school where the room was filled with green houseplants. The entire atmosphere of the room seemed more serene and happy. I decided then and there that I want to try to provide that atmosphere for my students.
I have selected four plants for our classroom. We will use these plants as part of our science unit on seeds and soil. We will also study the growth and cycles of the plants. Additionally, the students will learn responsibility as they take care of the plants.
The first plant is bamboo, botanically known as Dracaena sanderana. It grows in water like cut flowers. Masters of the ancient art form of feng shui recommend bamboo as a way to attract positive \"chi\" energy, which will be wonderful for the classroom.
The second plant is zamia, which is a cycads, a plant family that goes all the way back to the dinosaurs! This cycad is salt resistant and is a very hardy plant, which will be good for the classroom.
The third group of plants I chose is aromatic herbs of three favorites varieties: Lavender, Tri-color Sage and Pineapple Mint. These wonderfully fragrant herbs individually potted in 4 clay pots with saucers will teach the children about scent, taste and cooking. This plant group also includes an information booklet.
Because it has such a wonderful smell, I would also like our class to have a large Lavender plant. This plant will be able to be dried for art projects and to make sachets and potpourris as gifts the students can give for holidays.
We have a science unit on seeds that I would like to extend beyond the set time period. This will just be a start to make our class into the budding greenhouse of learning that I saw this weekend. Thank you for your consideration.
