This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our dear students live in a densely populated yet rapidly gentrifying area. They come to school with rich cultural and linguistic heritage, and they have a unique and vibrant view of their world. Through Journalism class, they learn college and career skills: leadership, journalistic writing, communication skills, photojournalism, design, and editing. We know students take photos and selfies constantly, but they need to learn how to tell a story through images. Our goal is that students acquire the skills to compose interesting, provocative photos for their publications (newspaper and yearbook) that can tell stories powerfully. We currently have one school camera for a class of 25-30 students, which is not adequate for our needs.

A new camera and portable storage drive will help students to develop their photography composition skills and to tell the stories of the school community more effectively.

Although we are a small school, we have an almost daily need to document activities: multiple sports teams throughout fall, winter, and spring, homecoming, dances, talent shows, etc. In addition, students will use these materials to learn and practice good compositional skills. They will also use a second camera to comprehensively document our school year and cover more stories for our publications. In addition, the storage drive will help students learn how to store and categorize photos for use in their publications. Overall, we want them to be able to utilize these materials to tell stories that are important to them.
