My students are culturally and ethnically diverse. Many languages are spoken at home and in school (Thai, Hmong, Cambodian, Spanish, Karen, Farsi, Arabic, Malay, Somali, Tedim Chin, and English). We are a high-poverty, Title I school with 100% of the student population qualifying for free and reduced rate lunch. Many students walk to school where they are offered breakfast which they eat in their classrooms. Many come from literacy impoverished backgrounds. Expanding and learning vocabulary, oral language acquisition, and building background knowledge through hands-on experiences, realia, and books are ways the English language learners are engaged in learning in my classroom.
My Project
Emergent English learners share discoveries as they learn English. Items such as the 'Mystery Box' and 'Touch and Match Guessing Game' provide opportunities for students to not only match objects with illustrations on cards but also see and feel a concrete object. Thus, students are able to make a connection between the word and the object. Learning positional words and prepositions can be tricky. The 'Positional Words Resource Box' will be a valuable tool to help emergent learners practice simple sentences and prepositions.
These supplies will provide learning activities so that English language learners "can do." Students can sort, can name, and can describe objects in short phrases in English.
By developing students' oral language they will acquire the skills to successfully speak, read and write in English.
