Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of the students at my school are eligible for free lunch. Also, a majority of our students are English Learners whose parents may not be high school graduates.
The goal at our school is for all students to aspire to attend college and have a plan for a future career.
Our school is located in an urban neighborhood with several colleges in our city, but many students may not see themselves as potential college graduates.
We want them to see their primary language as a strength that they can build upon. Students in my class have this opportunity since we learn in both English and Spanish.
My Project
The materials in this project will help my students explore their creative sides. In our classroom, we have an art station where students can create original artwork using a variety of materials. I also often conduct small group or whole class art lessons where I teach basic art skills, such as painting or sketching. However, the supplies we currently have are very old and almost used up. The paints, sketch pads, pastels, drawing pencils, and other supplies we receive in this project will help us restock our art station. Our school receives limited funding, which is designated for basic supplies, so art materials are a luxury.
Art should never be a luxury.
It should be an essential component of a well-rounded education. In our classroom, we often explore content areas, including science, math, and social studies, through art projects that help students develop a more conceptual understanding of the topics we are studying. For example, we will be using the water color paints, watercolor paper, and drawing pencils in this project to paint large-scale flowers inspired by artist Georgia O'Keefe. This will help students learn about plant structures and systems, which is part of our life science unit.
A majority of my students are English learners who have difficulty academically, and I use art as a means to give them opportunities to express themselves. Often students who struggle learning content in school become inspired when given the opportunity to creatively demonstrate their understanding. When they can create a piece of art, they feel successful and that their ideas are valued.
