My students are energetic and civically engaged 6th graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, and the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, an inner-city school in a community-oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school-sponsored events.
My students desire to be challenged academically and to grow as critical thinkers.
In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they can all achieve greatness.
Having an arts-rich school experience was a part of my educational experience growing up, and I strive to share many meaningful art lessons and activities with my students.
Because of the rigor and pacing of our math and language arts curriculum, my students need time and space to showcase their creativity and expand their imaginations.
With the help of materials such as mounting boards, new paintbrushes, and paper my students will be able to create mixed-media collages that use animal features as a base to grow their creativity. This project will connect to writing as they research the animal elements they wish to include in the project, and compose a written piece that relates to their artwork.
Having art in the classroom helps children with problem-solving and planning, as they make decisions on color and prepare their layout, and how to address "mistakes" in the process of creating their work. This project will help to engage my students in problem-solving and planning skills that relate to art and also transfer to other academic and social areas related to their learning.
