Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an inner city public school. The students in my class are preschoolers, ages 3-5. It is an integrated classroom, so I have children with and without special needs in my class. Most of the children with special needs have varying degrees of language delays, and many children in the class come from deprived home environments.
My mission in my classroom is to foster language development, a sense of unity, acceptance and belonging, and to instill in my students a lifelong excitement about learning and a love of learning.
I have seen wonderful examples of tolerance, compassion, and cooperation developing in my integrated classroom demonstrated by children with and without disabilities. I have also seen children blossom socially, emotionally, and intellectually, which is an exciting affirmation to me about the work that I do.
My Project
As part of our preschool curriculum, we are encouraged to set up fun and engaging learning centers in our classrooms. One of my students' favorite activities to do during choice time is to create original art using supplies from our art cabinet. This is an activity that all children can enjoy, regardless of ability level or age. Last year, one of my students announced that he was the "Art Teacher" and set up one of our classroom tables for a "lesson". He then proceeded to demonstrate how to cut and glue paper to make a collage! He had several eager "students" join him at the table!
This year, I would like to set up a special center for free choice art activities, with a separate table and chairs, space for supplies, and also space for the display of original creations!
The table and chairs I have chosen for this project will be a wonderful addition to this center.
