Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My sixth grade students come from racially and economically diverse backgrounds. They are clever, creative, and ready to be academically challenged. They need someone who believes in their unlimited potential, someone who will teach, challenge and love them. Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend, and our school also runs a food pantry for our families, 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch to aid in student participation and performance.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best.
They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day. They know students from their school have an excellent chance at attending college, and understand the sacrifices many of their parents have made for them to attend a magnet school with limited bus service. For many students, attendance at their school and hard work once they are here, is a ticket out of poverty for themselves and their families.
My Project
My students need 30 copies of the book “ Buddah’s Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom” to balance and supplement their stress-filled, rigouours International Baccalaureate Psychology course. This book offers practical mindfulness tips centered around kindness, empathy, love and care.
My students are under an amazing amount of academic stress at the very time in their lives when they are experiencing the upheaval that adolescents brings.
They are in need of practical information about lifelong skills to improve their ability to take care of themselves emotionally.
These books will be a welcomed relief from pure academics, but is still linked to evidence based best practices.
