Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in school can easily be when the students are complaining about what others have said or done to them. We need to teach our students to be positive and kind to each other; then reward them for that. Have you filled your bucket today?
My students live in a large urban public school district in New Jersey.
They are mostly Hispanic and include a high number of special education students. More than 85% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. A lot of our students come from single family homes and have to take on extra responsibilities. They don't have a chance to be 'kids.'
My Project
I hope to inspire my students to become positive citizens and to treat each other with respect. They need to become familiar with saying and doing kind things for each other. For example; smiling at someone, giving a classmate a compliment, helping others. There are many ways to fill buckets. Students will be focusing on what others are doing in a positive way, rather than focusing on negativity which they are used to. For example, if a student helps another classmate by picking something up, that student would be able to write it down and put it in their 'bucket' by the end of the day. I would like the language of bucket filling to become equal with being kind and thoughtful. At the end of each day, students can reflect on the ways in which they have filled their buckets.
Bucket filling has created a language that everyone can learn and understand; for example: You filled my bucket!
When your bucket is full, you feel more confident and positive. If your bucket is empty, you can easily become sad and negative. Please help my students become more positive since they encounter negativity too often.
