Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Soap Club students are all unique! They are 9-12 graders. Some are brilliant academically, some are talented artist. Some have a learning disability and some are mentors for the 9th grade cohort. Some of the students need the hours to be able to graduate and others are helping collect funds for charity and community service. All of my students are creative, and exceptional and that's what makes the club special.
Our high school, a Title I school, located in the Bronx, NY, has students coming from diverse backgrounds socially and economically.
One of the biggest challenges of small schools like ours, is not having enough resources to provide extracurricular activities. This year we began an initiative to create after school clubs for our students and allotted some funds to start them off. However in order to continue the soap club and keep it going, we will need additional funding.
My students look forward every week to our time in the lab. They are proud of the work we are doing and are already making plans for next year. My graduating seniors see it as a first step to life post high school.
My Project
The soap bases, fragrances and other supplies will help continue the mission that we started this year. These resources will help the students keep the soap making production going.
Each student has a job in the company that is necessary to keep it alive.
The production team need to make soap samples to create an inventory. The advertising team needs images of the soaps to create promotional materials and for the website. The sales team price and sell the soaps and accounting makes sure that we are making a profit. All the funds collected are donated to a local charity in the community.
This enterprise is a WBL site and allows the students to accumulate CTE hours. For some students this is their first job and they will learn specific skills and real life experiences. The students will also have an opportunity to work with and give back to their community.
