Brushing Up On Reading Skills By Telling Stories - Part 1
My students need manipulatives that can retell a variety of twelve stories and six various reading skill puzzles to use at our reading station, for growing abilities.
I remember my Kindergarten teacher telling us stories using the flannel board. She used simple calendar flannel pieces and told us wonderful stories. I would like my students to have that opportunity to see and hear stories using popular picture books and then tell them to each other.
Our Pre-K-8 school is located in a very rural, farming community, with approximately 79 students enrolled.
We have very supportive families, but with the current state of our economy, parents simply cannot afford to help out as much as they would like to.
Sports, farming, FFA, and 4H keep our families active in the community. This also means either our parents are busy working in the city or keeping farmers' hours in the fields.
Our graduating 8th graders choose one of five high schools to attend between two counties. However, our school is required to pay each for these students' tuition as they are considered out-of-district students. Our funding has been cut in all resources, due to state budget cuts. Yet, our school has received the Missouri Distinction in Performance Award every year awarded for the past 12 years, including this year. We believe healthy, active boys and girls make the world a better place.
My Project
The resources requested will accommodate a variety of abilities and skill levels, from contractions and plurals to compound words, these self-correcting puzzles give students hands-on practice with essential reading concepts. Also, the students will have the opportunity to create learned stories with twelve different storytelling kits. They will be able to use our flannel easel to tell stories using the flannel story kits provided. There will be modeling provided through instruction, that leads to literacy practice at the Kindergarten-aged level. These are hands-on literacy activities.
