“There are so many strategies that the arts teaches as far as higher-level thinking. To take kids out of the arts is kind of like taking a child out of science to do math.”
Tom Pearson
My third grade math students are eager to learn.
Using art enhances their learning by targeting specific areas. Art in the classroom makes learning fun, accessible, and exciting. It also reaches some students that are hard to reach with worksheets and lecture.
I teach in an older neighborhood school with a growing ELL population. We are Title 1 with a supportive parental base. Most of our families have both parents that work."
My Project
I use art to solidify math principles. The brushes and paint would be used in these projects. I like to do directed draws so that the students can practice both their estimating skills like "draw of line that is about 3 inches" and ruler prowess. I use abstract art projects to slip in math vocabulary such as right angle, acute angle, perpendicular lines and parallel lines. I want my students to understand that math is everywhere not just in math class.
I know the use of art will benefit all of my students in their learning.
Most importantly, it will be a motivating factor for my struggling students. I know art will definitely enhance every student's learning!
