My students are enthusiastic first graders working hard to excel against the odds. Eighty percent of my students receive a free lunch due to their families’ low economic status, and many come from unstable homes and are coping with trauma. Fifteen percent have been identified with learning disabilities and at least 3 other students are coping with AD/HD.
Despite these challenges, they bring a positive outlook to the class and are always looking to do their best and be a part of the classroom community.
Since 55 percent speak a language other than English, and, at the ages of five, six, and seven, all children are learning academic English. The children benefit greatly from lessons that enrich their vocabulary with visual images and a great deal of physical activity. This group particularly loves to have singing, movement, and dance woven into each lesson and activity.
My Project
Keeping warm while concentrating on learning is essential! Our school is near the coast and has VERY poor heating. When we're hit by fog, overcast weather, and of course during the winter months, we are EXTREMELY cold. My students find it very difficult to concentrate on lessons and working on assignments under these conditions.
There's nothing quite like a hot cup of tea to help warm the body.
The electric kettle, teapot, herbal tea sampler set, and reusable bamboo mugs will give my students access to hot liquids as they cope with the colder days of the school year.
I also want to teach my students about healthy eating and conservation. The herbal teas are a nice alternative to hot cocoa. The teapot with infuser will also allow me to show them how we can make mint and lemon verbena tea from plants in our school garden. I also want to discourage them from using foam and paper cups that are disposable and waste resources. The bamboo reusable mugs will help them participate in the process of reusing materials. The mugs are stackable so they will take up a minimum of storage space. They're also made of bamboo so I don't have to worry about students accidentally breaking them.
