Help me give my students access to new reading materials to engage in some self-discovery while reading about a strong black woman during Black History Month.

I am an urban educator in Detroit, Michigan, where I teach 6th and 7th grade. All of the students at our school receive free lunch. Though we can sometimes be surrounded by chaos, our classroom has become our safe haven. I am determined to make this year my best year as an educator and my students' best year as students.
My students embody our habits of character, compassion, curiosity, creativity, cooperation, integrity, responsibility, and perseverance.
These habits of character drive our approach to educate our students beyond the classroom. Many of my students have grown up together, and we are excited to set and exceed our academic goals.
With Black History Month quickly approaching, we are excited to expand our minds, hearts and knowledge of African American women. Through this novel, our students will be able to discover what it was like to grow up as a young black female in the 1960s and 1970s.
Throughout this unit, students will be able to reflect on Woodson's experience and create stories or poems that reflects their own voice.
Through this novel, we hope to develop more understanding about the past and how it impacts our future. While reading this text, we will study other strong, influential black women.
