Brooklyn to DC: Field Trip to Explore American Diversity
Help me give my students an opportunity to see themselves reflected in our nation's history through an overnight trip to DC to explore US History and Government through diverse lenses.
My students are diverse, quirky, and among the kindest human beings I have had the pleasure to know! The group of students that I am currently working with have all opted in to doing historical research in their free time. The are so invested in every opportunity that I can offer them and I want to give them access to some of what Washington, DC has to offer.
One of the most exciting about my students is how passionately and empathetically they approach their history education.
They have so many questions about the depth of history and have a desire to understand it in all of its complexities. They also want to see themselves in history and think a lot about angles of American history that reflect their own experiences and backgrounds.
My Project
My students spend a significant amount of time studying monument interpretation and public history in their junior year American History course. They think deeply about how to use museums and monuments as a way to enhance their knowledge of the American narrative. This project will fund our entire trip to DC including bus transportation to and from DC and hotel in a suburban neighborhood.
DC is sometimes thought of as an exclusive or elite place that encompasses the history of a certain type of person, we want our wonderfully diverse students to understand that DC represents all of America.
On our trip we intend to visit institutions that speak to a diverse American experience. We have on our schedule time at The National Museum of the American Indian, The National Museum of African American History and Culture, Arlington National Cemetery and The Library of Congress to visit the Women's Suffrage exhibit among other stops.
Our students deserve to feel like the nation's capitol belongs to them and find their stories reflected in it.
