This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a wide diversity of communities throughout Brooklyn, NY. They arrive in middle school with a range of skill in the performing arts. Some have a good deal of experience and confidence. For most however, this is their first real experience as performers.
My students are powerful by empowering each other.
They have serious fun. And they sing, act, and dance like nobody's business.
Students study musical theatre in classes that take place during the school day as part of the regular school curriculum.
My Project
With British composer and recording engineer Jude Obermüller, students in grade 6, 7 and 8 will record the audio for five songs. From there, the students will shoot five music videos to create a lasting showcase of their work in musical theatre class.
We will transform the classroom into a recording studio where Brooklyn Prospect middle school students will learn the skills and rigors of professional recording.
The final product will demonstrate the power of the united voices in Brooklyn Prospect's diverse community of learners.
Mr. Obermüller has collaborated closely with luminaries of popular music and musical theatre including Robbie Williams, Les Misérables creator Alain Boulil, and Broadway star Cynthia Erivo. He's received numerous honors from celebrated institutions including New York City Center and The Cameron Mackintosh Foundation.
