I am proposing for equipment needed to support a mural project to be completed by 6-8th grade middle school art students. Our middle school is relocating to a new building in the fall of 2005. Our new space is in need of beautification, a task that could easily be completed by our talented students if we had the adequate supplies for this project.
As a brand new Brooklyn public middle school that opened up in the beginning of the 2003-2004 school year one of the school's emphasis is to build our art programs (which includes dance, drama, music, visual art, and technology) to become one of the finest in our city. All students in our middle school take five periods of art classes per week and focus on one arts area as a major for their entire time in our school.
Students participating in this mural project will include one hundred of the children I teach each year who have elected to major in visual art. The thematic murals that will be painted will be entirely designed and painted by students using a cooperative approach. Supplies needed to fund this proposed course include painting supplies for mural making and resources materials to introduce students to the history of mural making and public artworks in New York City and throughout the world.
With these materials and supplies, students will gain familiarity with and use a variety of art resources and materials, organize their ideas, values, and beliefs into visual art expressions, using the processes and materials of visual art through a variety of cooperative artistic experiences, to help them understand, interpret, and appreciate the natural and man-made visual world and the interior world of their own imagination.
