Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Perhaps you think that most students cannot wait to get out of the building after school is over. If so, you would be wrong...I teach in the inner city Bronx, NY, and for most of my students, there is no one at home for them to go home to after the school day has ended. Most of my Hispanic students come from low-income, single parent households in which their one parent often works long hours late into the night.
As a result, hoards of students remain at school after classes have ended: some participate halfheartedly in extracurricular activities they are not really interested in, a dedicated few attend my tutoring sessions, and most just wander the halls until security kicks them out. These students have found a replacement home and family in the after-school setting that their teachers and peers provide.
One thing I noticed about all of these students who remain after, however, is that they LOVE to play games. In the age of fast-paced and over-stimulating video games, one might think that they would have no patience for a seemingly simple game of chess. Yet again, my students have proven this theory wrong. After taking out the two flimsy chess sets I own, I was shocked to discover the excitement this game of skill created among my students.
Friends were teaching friends how to play, students were pondering the best mathematical moves to make, and the hall denizens were gravitating toward my classroom in order to watch a game in action. I plan to use these marvelous Chess Sets to create an after school Chess Club. Chess is a highly intellectual game that can only benefit my students socially as well as mentally as they congregate into the family classroom we will create together. Bobby Fischer may have been good, but with a little practice and the proper chess sets, I bet my students could take him on!
