I am a new teacher this year at P.S./M.S. 194 in the Bronx. Most of the students who attend my school come from low income families and receive free lunch. The teachers and the administration at my school have been working hard to promote a high level of reading achievement in our students. However, since our school has only been open for one year the classroom libraries do not yet have all of the materials which could make this goal a reality.
I teach 24 3rd grade students who are working hard to get ready for the promotional exams in April. Many of my students are either receiving special education services or are learning English as a second language. As a result, they are only reading at a first or second grade level and I am concerned that they may not be promoted to fourth grade at the end of the year.
Some of my students do not want to participate during reading time because they are frustrated and embarrassed that they can't read the books in our library.
I would like to help them become better readers by using a listening center. While my school has provided me with a brand new center which 6 students can use at a time, we only have 2 sets of books with audio tapes. The students really love to read the books while listening to them. It would really help me get them excited about reading if we had more books with tapes for them to use during reading time. I also feel that this would increase their reading skills quickly, as they would hear the words pronounced correctly as they read along their own copy of the book. Since the book sets come with 4 copies of each book, we could then discuss together what they have read to increase their reading comprehension.
