Our school is an academically successful, rural high school that is filled to the brim with about 900 wonderful students. At our school, we serve our military community by educating students whose parents serve or work at the USMC and Naval facilities at Camp Lejeune or Cherry Point, the two Coast Guard stations, and/or Bogue Air Field. I teach many students across all grade levels in my band classes as well as after-school music and performing arts programs.
This fall, our school and community sustained significant damage from Hurricane Florence.
Many of my students are currently displaced from their homes and lost many personal belongings in the storm.
In the state's ranking system, our high-performing high school has been ranked as a top ten public high school in NC for ten consecutive years. Through our state's report card system, we have been given an "A+" designation four years in a row.
We sustain a rich history of high-quality musical productions, receiving the highest ratings at state adjudications annually. The support we receive directly correlates to that success.
Even with our high achievement and growth, we are still striving to make an improvement. There's always something we can do to progress
My Project
Our percussion students are currently using a broken drum set throne and a wobbly stool when playing timpani. We no longer have a working amplifier to use for jazz band.
These thrones would be used by percussion students on a daily basis when playing drum set and timpani and the amplifiers will replace the same unit that is nearly 20 years old and no longer works and a broken guitar amp.
Not only are our current options limited, they inhibit students ability to safely and comfortably manuever while playing these instruments. Our Roland piano amplifier that we use for jazz band stopped working last year and repair efforts were unsuccessful.
These items will not only impact the students that directly use them, but will have an impact on all students in the band program.
