Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are talented and creative! They also have very difficult lives. Unfortunately, they are in a school where over 80% of our school population lives at or below the poverty level. Getting their daily needs met can be a challenge.
It is a difficult task to teach students to love school because living in the city is quite a challenging experience.
Working in an inner city I get to see a variety of challenges. I see students who do not have many basic needs being met at home. Missing a meal or wearing dirty clothes is a common occurrence. Even with this type of hardship, they come to school with a smile on their face!
My Project
Remember how much fun it was to put a headset on and be taken away by a fabulous story? I would like to provide these exciting young minds the opportunity to listen to a story at anytime. Currently, I do not have any working headphones for our listening centers, computers, or iPads! Despite all of our financial challenges, I have an exciting class of second graders ready and willing to learn. As their teacher I am constantly looking for ways to get them to read.
Did you know that listening to reading is an important component to becoming fabulous readers, especially for my English Language Learners (ell's)?
The problem is that with no money we can not purchase the things we need. My students can't hear the stories and learning programs we have available without the necessary headphones. What I am requesting is a classroom set of good quality headphones that will work on the various types of technology that I have - thanks to Donors Choose! I need these headphones so that my students can be engaged in listening to reading all over my classroom. If I am able to give them what they need that would be amazing! To also give them the chance to be independent in their choices would be priceless. They will not only become better readers, but better students because they could experience stories in a new and interactive way.
These headphones would make a world of difference in my classroom.
