Help me give my students a set of hard cover dictionaries! Many of my students are ESL/Second Language Learners, and it is essential that they have appropriate, sturdy learning resources that don't fall apart when they use them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you look only at our demographics, our school is one that would be considered challenging: high numbers of students at risk, qualifying as English language learners, living without one or both parents, and high numbers of kids in poverty. As a public charter, we work with less money than other schools, and still strive to give our best to our students.
These kids are the ones who no one expects to go graduate, let alone go to college, and yet we have a nearly 100% high school graduation and college placement rate.
We pride ourselves on being that "other school" in town. We aren't huge. We don't have a big sports showing. We don't even have a band program. However, we have a "small but mighty" student body who can overcome all kinds of odds that are thrown at them. Our kids are making serious strides everyday to overcome the obstacles they find themselves in, and, as a school, it's our duty to help them find ways to meet those challenges.
My Project
Students in my class are constantly learning new words--spelling, definitions, you name it! The set of dictionaries we have right now are nearly a decade old and are literally falling apart. The ones that aren't duct taped together are missing pages, have sections missing, and have been so widely used that few are now usable by my current kids.
My students deserve the opportunity to have updated materials that are in one piece so they can find words, practice alphabetizing skills, and learn new vocab without saying, "Miss, my dictionary is missing 10 pages!" So many kids struggle with reading and learning vocabulary, and for many of them, it's why they struggle with the state assessments and day to day business in the classroom.
Sometimes, it's the reason they ultimately give up and leave school. We can help prevent that by providing communication and language skills that are relevant to the real world and the work force, and that starts with basic reading and word sleuthing skills.
