Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I've heard some of my students say, "Sometimes, art class is the only reason I come to school." They are focused, asking questions constantly, and want and need more from the ARTS!
The students at Broadway High School make up a unique population in the San Jose Unified School district.
The majority of the students here are Latina/o, and have been traditionally marginalized. They are students who have been through experiences in which most other high school students don't go through. We have many young parents, and have an excellent young families program on campus, which allows students to bring their children to school while earning their high school diploma. The student at Broadway High School are incredibly motivated in the face of many different circumstances, and many times, the arts have been the only area in which they feel they have been successful in school.
My Project
We are having the Broadway High School First Annual Art Show 2014 on May 8th, 2014. This art show will happen simultaneously with a student recognition night, in which students will be recognized academically. This night will bring parents, family and friends together to help recognize our students. We need our art show to look nice, and we have no frames, and no where to put art in our multi-use building. We need a folding panel to hang the artwork, frames of all different sizes to hold student artwork, and tape and other essential materials to post names and titles under the artwork. Parents and community will come from all around San Jose to see their students come up to receive their "star awards" and I'm hoping to display their artwork the way in which they deserve. With class and style!
We are in desperate need of equity and social justice in terms of funding for the arts at our school.
My students join me on "unofficial field trips" at art museums on Friday evenings, being inspired and excited to see art in traditional gallery settings. We don't have money for field trips or nice materials, and my students deserve a decent art show to show off their own work, and materials we can use year after year for more and more art shows!
