Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class consists of thirty-nine males and thirty-seven females. Ninety-two percent of the students in my class are on a free or reduce priced lunch program. Most students come from a blue collar working family. We are in a high poverty location. My class is an essential way for them to be exposed to an engineering field. Project Lead the Way inspires students to seek a career in a STEM field. My class has many diverse nationalities, of which 60% are Hispanic, 30% African American, and the remaining 10% are other races. I have students who are English Language Learners and will benefit from the hands-on learning that they might otherwise not receive.
My Project
My students take great pride in their work. They are a group of Makers that have the opportunity of playing the role of an engineer to solve real-life problems. My students have projects ranging from building a working prosthetic arm to programming a robot. Some of the projects they make in class can be taken home, but several projects must be taken apart to reuse the materials. Having a portable studio, microphones, and a video camera can help students broadcast their projects on our school or district website before they have to take it apart.
My students need a video camera, microphones, and a portable studio to broadcast their projects for the world to see.
Broadcasting my student's work will allow parents, community members, and board members a glimpse into our classroom. Having these resources available in my classroom will allow students to work on their presentation skills while explaining the engineering design and maintaining a record of their projects. This project can help students who are afraid of public speaking because they can record their presentation outside of our classroom time, but still complete their presentations through a broadcast message. Students will be able to leave a broadcast imprint on our school website by showing off all the great work they do in my class.
