Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our broadcast journalism program has just begun its third year. The class is made up of a wide variety of students, which accurately reflects the diverse makeup of our student body. The course has also reinforced the importance of strong writing and presentation skills for success in college and in their careers.
My students are charming, entertaining, and terrifyingly bright when engaged in a project.
They have created commercials for school activities, public service announcements about issues facing today's teenagers, and created feature packages about happenings on campus.
Our goal this year is to use video to tell the story of our school in partnership with our online newspaper and yearbook programs, as well as a bi-weekly news show.
My Project
For two years, we have been working to create a broadcast journalism program. Much of those years was spent on the technical: How do encoders work? How do we distribute our videos? How do we use Adobe Premiere effectively? And many more questions. As we embark on our third year, we have a firm grasp on the technical and are preparing for the next step.
Our goal for this year is to increase the journalistic aspects of the program by using video to tell the stories of our students and community.
Most of our previous packages were commercials or public service announcements. Our goal this year is to launch a longer format bi-weekly news show that not just promotes what is coming up, but covers what has already happened.
The products requested here will allow students to use their smartphones with our tripods, greatly increasing the number of available cameras since most of their phones can record in 1080p or 4K. The requested dolly will enable us to keep the camera level while in motion; this is helpful for "walk and talk" segments, filming sports, and more. The lavalier microphones will provide quality audio by placing the microphone closer to the audio source; we currently are limited to our cameras' built-in microphones.
