The cost of a tour of the USS Yorktown and the Patriot's Point Naval & Maritime Museum is $477 for 50 students and their chaperones, including <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
What? You mean we are going to Charleston? What will we get to see? Those are the questions that the fifth graders at my school are asking the teachers right now. With your help, I will be able to tell the students that the USS Yorktown is one of the things they will get to see. We are in the process of planning an educational overnight trip to Charleston for the 50 fifth graders at our school. This is a school where almost 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. It is also a school where most of the parents work at least one job, many of them on second or third shift. That means it is a school where most of the children will not have a chance to visit Charleston or any other city for an overnight trip.
The South Carolina Social Studies Standards for fifth grade cover the history of the United States from 1865 to the present. That is quite a lot of history to learn in one year. However, by taking the students to visit the USS Yorktown and the museum at Patriot's Point, I believe that the students will really be able to learn and appreciate the United States' involvement in World War II. Research has proven they students learn better through authentic experiences. What better way to learn about a war than to tour an actual ship that was used during it?
As well as the actual learning experience, we are hoping to offer our students a rich life-experience. Many of the students have not been away from home for overnight and plenty have never traveled out of Spartanburg county. We believe this will be an invaluable trip for these underprivileged students.
What we are asking for is simply the admission fee to the Patriot's Point museum which includes a tour of the USS Yorktown. The trip we are planning also includes an overnight experience at the South Carolina Aquarium and a visit to the Charleston Museum that the parents will be paying for.
Please help us provide a wonderful learning experience for our students! They will cherish the memory for a lifetime!
