Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students want to succeed in school and in life. As a teacher, in a high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Help me bridge the gap.
My students come from a low socio-economic status, the inner-city, and have special needs.
Their various disabilities include learning disabilities in reading and math, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disabilities, and autism spectrum disorder. I also have students that experience homelessness. I need to do all I can during school hours to help these students progress to well-developed, smart young men and women. To effectively teach students in a wide range of levels, I need many resources.
My students and parents do not have the financial means to provide essentials. Now more than ever I need help bringing in the necessary materials and resources to help my students succeed in school.
My Project
Understanding the world around us has never been more important. For most of us, that understanding begins at an early age, in the classroom.
Students are looking to their teachers for knowledge about a world that is not yet part of their own lived experience.
I was able to get funded an educational tour to Morocco . However, I would like to get funding for supplemental experiences. I would like to go to Europe 1 week earlier so I can experience and gain new insights on the cities of Zürich, Munich, and Prague.
I would like to make a compilation of short videos of myself teaching mini-lessons. For example, I would make a video in front of a castle and talk about the structure, how old it is and how different it is from the buildings in Miami. Another video would be in a toy store showing a variety of different toys in that country that we do not have in Miami. Other ideas are videos of foods, animals, vehicles, clothing, homes and landscapes that are different from what my students are used to seeing. I plan to bring back from this experience materials that I can build an entire month-long unit on European geography, art, and history. My professional instruction will be enhanced with the cultural and diverse experiences in this exploration. Students will also be provided with opportunities to create and reenact artwork, ruins, and writings from Zürich, Munich, and Prague for their own learning, reflection, and development.
